There is a medicine that prolongs the children’s lives, but it must be taken every six hours, every day and night, just to stay alive. Since 2003, the CRF has held annual “Natalie’s Wish” fundraisers generating more than $6.2 million. One hundred percent of all donations go directly to funding research for treatments and a cure. So far, the CRF has funded 32 studies in the United States and Europe. Already, the CRF’s efforts are producing impressive results. Last year, Natalie and five other children participated in the second phase of a study at U.C. San Diego of a slow-release form of the current and only medication available to treat cystinosis. This slowrelease medicine can be taken every eight to twelve hours, allowing the children to sleep through the night.
