Texas Star Orakpo Named Lott Player of the Week

NEWPORT BEACH, Ca. – Texas Defensive End Brian Orakpo has been named the winner of The Lott Trophy IMPACT® Player of the Week presented by Wachovia.

Orakpo (6-4, 260, Houston) had two sacks, four tackles for losses and a forced fumble as Texas defeated the No. 1 team in the country, Oklahoma, 45-35.  Texas will receive $1,000 for its general scholarship fund in recognition of Orakpo’s performance.

Orakpo was selected by The Legends Football Coaches Association.  Former Texas A&M Coach R.C. Slocum, a member of the Legends Coaches, said:  “Orakpo had a dominating performance in a big time game against No. 1 Oklahoma.  He had an outstanding game against Arkansas a few weeks ago, but this week he surpassed that earlier performance with 4 tackles for losses, 2 sacks and a forced fumble against the No. 1 team in the country. His performance in such an important game was a real difference maker in my opinion. He was keeping (Oklahoma quarterback Sam) Bradford from getting any rhythm which slowed down the OU offense. His play had a major impact on the outcome of the game.”

Orakpo becomes the first player to win the award twice this season, having been named Lott Trophy IMPACT® Player of the Week two weeks ago.

Named after Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, The Lott Trophy® is awarded to college football’s Defensive IMPACT® Player of the Year.  Now in its fifth year, The Lott Trophy® is the first college football award to equally recognize athletic performance and the personal character attributes of the player.

Sponsored by The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation® in Newport Beach, Ca., the award is given to a player who exhibits the same characteristics Lott embodied during his distinguished career: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.
