LOTT CANDIDATE SHOWS KIDS THE RIGHT WAY
What do you do on your day off?
If you’re a USC football All-American headed to a huge NFL contract, you could do about anything you want. The beach. Sleep late. Flip on the TV.
But Taylor Mays chose to spend last Saturday, a bye weekend for the No. 5-ranked Trojans, going to a youth football clinic in the Watts area of Los Angeles and spread both fun and advise to underprivileged kids.
“To get to where you want in life, you’ve got to be able to do the right things,” Mays told the kids, who were all in awe of the 6-3, 230-pound senior’s remarkable physique and easy-going manner.
It is that kind of community involvement – along with his impressive football accomplishments—that makes Mays a quarter-finalist for the annual Lott Trophy, given to the student-athlete who combines on field success with off-field dedication.
“These are the kind of out-reach involvements our candidates for the Lott Trophy exhibit all the time,” said Bob Cristiano, President of the Pacifc Club’s IMPACT Foundation, sponsors of the annual award. “Taylor is one of those outstanding young men we are proud to consider for the award.”
Named after Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, the Lott Trophy is awarded to college football’s Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year. Now in its sixth year, the Lott Trophy is the first college football award to equally recognize athletic performance and the personal character attributes of the player.
Sponsored by The Pacific Club IMPACT* Foundation in Newport Beach, the award is given to the player who exhibits the same characteristics Lott embodied during his distinguished career: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.
The winner of the award will be announced at a banquet Dec. 13 at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach.
